Herzliya, Israel – November 8, 2015 – Somatix is announcing the launch of SmokeBeat, a revolutionary smoking cessation mobile application which automatically identifies users who are smoking by utilizing sensors in smartwatches and wristbands.
SmokeBeat is the first of its kind smoking cessation app which automatically detects smoking in real-time using data from sensors in commercial off-the-shelf smartwatches and wristbands. SmokeBeat is powered by the Somatix Platform, a proprietary algorithm which recognizes “hand-to-mouth” gestures, and distinguishes between eating, drinking, shaving, smoking, and other actions. According to Eran Ofir, CEO of Somatix “Our goal is to help smokers reduce and quit smoking and live healthier lives, by leveraging existing technology and creating a personalized smoking cession experience for each user”.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are over a Billion smokers worldwide, consuming over six Trillion cigarettes per year. Tobacco is the number one cause of preventable death globally, with nearly six Million deaths every year. Cigarette smoking is the cause for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including nearly 42,000 deaths from secondhand smoke exposure.
SmokeBeat enables smokers to get a better understanding of their smoking habit and assists them in effectively changing their behavior by reducing and quitting cigarettes. Once SmokeBeat identifies a user is smoking, the user receives immediate relevant alerts which serves as a catalyst for a behavioral health change. The various alerts consist of rational, emotional, financial and social incentives for smoking volume reduction. The effectiveness of these incentives is continuously measured to optimize, assist and support users to reach their harm reduction goals, and live healthier lives.
